Forthcoming Legislation

Employments Rights Act

The forthcoming Employment Rights Act has triggered my thinking. During the past 30+ years of working in HR, I spent some time as a HR Tutor with Malpas Flexible Learning and then BPP.

During this time I had discussions with students who all worked within HR in their companies, especially in relation to employment law and what they saw as the ‘real world’ in which they worked on a daily basis.

Often there was a tension between legislation in place and the challenges of implementation within the business. This was shaped by the ‘business needs’ and the need to operate as a HR professional in advising on and ensuring that the law was adhered to.

The new legislation will I think provide some real challenges for both HR professionals and the businesses in which they work, not least within small and medium sized business with perhaps less HR resource than their larger counterparts. I am sure we will see the outcomes in due course.
